I got my macbook in 08, and recently ever since I upgraded the system to Os, the gray restart button screen keeps popping up. I haven’t yet tried your method, but did you ever figure out why it did that?

Glad you saved it! Just as a side note since it wasn’t mentioned, holding down the X key during startup forces the computer to boot into Mac OS X. This was needed when a Dual boot into OS 9 was possible, and I wasn’t sure why Apple kept it around, but I am sure you are glad they did!
